Celebrate the Colors of Spring

Seven full days of sunshine!
That's all we've had since January 1st!
I'm not saying we haven't seen sunshine
on other days, we have,
but those days were mostly cloudy or partly cloudy.
Only seven full days of sunshine in over two months . . . .
no wonder my Vitamin D level is low!!

I'm saying that to explain why my sister, sister-in-law and I made the trip to Garvan Woodland Gardens on a misty, overcast day. We wanted to see the daffodils before they were frozen by the way-below-normal-temperatures in the forecast.

There are several paths you can take through the garden. We came for the daffodils, so we headed that way first.

On our way we spotted some pretty red tulips that were just beginning to bloom. We'll need to go back in a few weeks to see all the tulips in full bloom.

On the way to Daffodil Hill we pasted by thousands of hyacinths. I don't remember ever seeing the darker purple ones before.

We ventured down the Camellia Trail to see if there were any blossoms left and there were! Some very pretty ones.

Finally we came to Daffodil Hill! This is only a very small portion of the daffodils scattered across the hill. No matter which way you turn on this small hill, you can see daffodils.

As I mentioned before there are several paths you can take through the garden. We didn't take this one. It looked much to slippery, not to mention very steep. We sure didn't want to chance a fall!

A new addition to the garden this year is the tree house in the Evans Children's Adventure Garden. This pictures doesn't begin to show how large it is. I should have asked my sister and sister-in-law to go up in the tree house and wave at me! The 500 square foot structure is 28 foot tall. Adults can stand on the first two levels with no problem at all! The third level, well we didn't go that far. You have to climb a rope net to the crow's nest. A small area that gives you a bird's-eye view of the woods. Josh Siebert, the architect, describes the idea behind this modern looking tree house by saying "Our concept was a tree house in the woods and amongst the woods. It floats, it's mysterious, but it's also modern." I'll admit when I first saw it, I wasn't impressed. I'm not real keen on modern architecture, but the beauty for me was on the inside.

I love the repetition of the yellow pine ribs and the spectacular views.

As you leave the tree house, there are some really cool mirrors set in the railing. They reminded me of fun house mirrors at carnivals. They each made you look a little different and sometimes silly. I avoided the one that made me look short and rather plump!!

We wandered back to the front of the garden to eat lunch at the Chipmunk Cafe. As we waited for our food, we watched three very friendly, not-scared-of-people peacocks. Or I guess I should say one peacock and two peahens. Last year there was only the peacock. Maybe with the addition of two peahens, little pea chicks may be in the future.

You have to be patient, but they will eventually show off their feathers.

Despite the damp, chilly air we enjoyed our day out. This day was also a celebration for me. I am one year cancer free. It's been a long year, sometimes difficult, but I feel like I've passed a milestone!

Friday Finds & Random Facts

It wasn't hard to FIND something to photograph this week. We had a day of ice that led to many delightful finds. I was intrigued by all the shapes the ice made and also the textures in the formations. Ice makes pretty bokeh, too!

Some Random Facts from the week:

Fact  #1
I mentioned the ice day, but that wasn't all the weather news we had this week. One day our temps were the coldest we'd had in Arkansas in about 20 years!  Brr!

Fact  #2
I have pink insulated underwear!  I never thought I'd talk about underwear on my blog, but there's a first time for everything. Right?  It wasn't that I wanted pink when I bought them last year, it was that pink was all they had left! Pink is not one of my favorite colors. This week I'm so grateful for their added warmth that I don't care what color they are. See my fat feet...that's the result of multiple pairs of socks!

Fact  #3
I finally dismantled Christmas!  I still wasn't ready to take it down, but it was either take it down or dust it!

Fact  #4
Mr. H returned to work this week following his surgery and my dad came home from the hospital after his hip replacement.  Mr. H had a good day and my dad is so glad to be home.  Don't tell Mr. H, but I've enjoyed a little quiet, me-time this week!

Fact  #5
My favorite movie is "You've Got Mail." Oh, I wish they made more like that!  Anyway, in the movie Kathleen (Meg Ryan) visits the new Fox Bookstore where she overhears a conversation between an employee and a mother looking for the "Shoe" books. The conversation goes as follows:

       WOMAN SHOPPER
Do you have the "Shoe" books?

     SALESPERSON
The "Shoe" books?  Who's the author?

     WOMAN SHOPPER
I don't know.  My friend told me my
daughter has to read the "Shoe" books,
so here I am.

     KATHLEEN
Noel Streatfeild.  Noel Streatfeild wrote
Ballet Shoes and Skating Shoes and
Theater Shoes and Movie Shoes...
(she starts crying as she tells
her)
I'd start with Skating Shoes, it's my
favorite, although Ballet Shoes is
completely wonderful.

     SALESPERSON
Streatfeild.  How do you spell that?

     KATHLEEN
S-T-R-E-A-T-F-E-I-L-D.

     WOMAN SHOPPER
Thank you.

     KATHLEEN
They know nothing. They know absolutely nothing!

Now fast forward to today! After all these years I decided to read "Ballet Shoes" only there wasn't a copy in our library. How sad!  They did have the audio version, so I've been listening to it as I've put up the Christmas decorations. I must say, it's a delightful book and made better since the reader has a British accent.  Here's an extra fact. You've Got Mail is loosely based on a Hungarian play "The Shop Around The Corner" by Nikolaus Laszlo. The play was made into a movie in 1940 starring James Stewart.

I hope you have a lovely weekend. I know some of you still have snow, ice and freezing temps. I probably shouldn't tell you, but we're getting up in the high 50's this weekend and even 60 next week! That will be 40-50 degrees warmer than this week!!

It's Friday!

Since the pace has slowed down after the holidays, I decided to join Kim and her Friday Finds again. It's been a while and I've missed it. Although it was very cold this morning, I went for a walk to get some fresh air and see what I might find. Don't tell the squirrels, but I found one of their hiding places. We have so many acorns around here that they don't really have to hide them at all!  There are millions right out there in the open! I'm not sure what the little orange thing is. It looks like a mini-pumpkin only it's hard like a seedpod.

I've also decided to try something new on Fridays. Nancy at A Rural Journal has a link up called Random 5 Friday. Nancy describes it as "where you share 5 random facts about you, your day, your pets, your kids, whatever!" I'm not sure about this, because I get mind block when I have to think randomly. But, I'll be brave and give it a try for a while.

Fact #1
I bought myself some new socks this week. I have the most BORING collection of socks, mostly white. So, I decided to spruce up my sock drawer with a little color!

Fact #2
My favorite store bought Christmas candy is Chocolate Covered Cherries. This is the last one!  I could buy some more, but I'd eat them all year long and that's not a good thing!

Fact #3
I don't know what path I'll be following this year. Do I want to have a "one little word?"  Where do I want to go with my photography?  What do I want to learn?  This is too stressful...I'll think about it later!

Fact #5
My hear goes pitter-patter really fast when I see cool shadows!

Fact #5
Ummmmm!  I sometimes see weird things in nature. Like this.  When I looked at these vines twined around a knot on a tree branch I saw an eye looking back at me.  Do you see it?  Please don't tell me if your answer is no!

That wasn't so hard!
I did find some randomness to talk about!

Photo-Heart Connection ~ June 2013

I’ve passed this arrow on the road where I walk many times. I’d never stopped to take a picture of it until this day. I’d been doing some pretty heavy thinking for two days. You see when I took this picture I was 60 years and one day old. The day before had been my birthday. I’ve never given age any thought at all. Each year I celebrated the day and that was that. I didn’t care how old I was. I never felt as old as the numbers said anyway. This year was different. Sixty is a major milestone and it had not started out too well. On the morning of my birthday I woke up with a stomach virus. Now, I’m telling you that is NO fun on your birthday. That means no visits from family, no party; not even a cake. Looking on the bright side though, I lazied around in bed all day. My daughter and her three boys called and sang Happy Birthday to me. My son’s oldest boy drew me a birthday card, his mother took his picture holding it, and emailed it to me. I received birthday cards in the mail,  several phone calls, and also enjoyed birthday wishes on FB. Seriously, that’s a pretty special day. Just think what it would have been like with no phones or internet service!! Thankfully it was only a 24 hour bug, so bright and early the next day I was out walking.

I always walk with my camera, so when I walked across the arrow I backed up, stopped and took a picture to represent a start of a new year. Where will this year take me? What will I  do? Where will I travel with my camera? Will I use my year wisely?

To celebrate this year I’ve started not one, but two 365 projects. One is called “where I am.”  I’m taking a picture each day of my feet and what I’m doing. The second is “seeking the light.” I want to capture all the small things that bring me joy and photograph them paying special attention to light. I also started a “joy jar” where at the end of each day I jot down one moment that brought me joy.  You see, I want to celebrate this entire year. I’m so very grateful to be 60, to be healthy, and to be loved. I want my life to be a reflection of that.

Spring or Summer?

Everyone says the weather is beautiful!
Perfect spring day!
Warm temperatures!

Well, everyone does not include me!  Any temperature above 62 is too hot for me. It's sad that I only enjoy the months of December, January, and February. I'm so hot natured that those are the only months when I'm comfortable. I don't wear sweaters or long sleeves. I own a coat, but it is just thrown in the backseat of the car...just in case.  I know, I've been told I'm weird, not normal, and strange! I'm OK with being different, I just wish I weren't different seven months of the year!!  I guess I just want to say I miss winter already! I'm not ready for heat and two showers a day!! Just so you know,  the air-conditioner in the house is running today.

On the bright side, I get to wear flip flops again and the trees, bushes, flowers, and sky are gorgeous!  See, I don't dislike everything about spring, summer, and fall!! Look at these lovely, delicate blooms on my Bradford Pear tree. So lovely! Did you know  they STINK?   Really stink, as in hold-your-nose-stink!  I love this tree only it puts off such an awful odor when it blooms that you can't stand to be close to it! If you choose to plant one, make sure you don't plant it next to a window that you want to open! You'll be sorry.

I have been working in the yard the last couple of mornings, when it was still in the low 60's. Here's what I've spotted:

  • ant
  • bumble bee (I don't mind bumble bees)
  • red wasp
  • cricket
  • termites (not on my house, under a piece of rotted wood I was raking)
  • mosquito (yeah, he got me)
  • tick (UGH!!)
  • gnat
  • frog (ribbit)

And the reasons go on...I miss winter!!!

I don't state my opinions on my blog very often, but this time it just came pouring out!  I thought about turning off the comments on this post!  I know someone is going to hate me, but instead I'll just leave you with this old quote.

"Never judge a person until you've walked a mile in their shoes."

I do hope that you're beginning to see a little spring in your neck of the woods. It is simply gorgeous and I'm sure YOU will enjoy every minute of it!

P.S. Just so you know I am miserably hot, yet I'm still smiling!!

Thanks for listening!

{in the picture} ~ December 2012

In The Picture

I am just not believing it!!
I missed the last link up for {in the picture}!!!
I'm a little disappointed in myself,
actually very disappointed!
Our last prompt was "celebrate."
I chose to celebrate Christmas!

This ornament has special meaning to me.
It hung on our very first Christmas tree forty years ago!

I  have a large collection of "The Night Before Christmas" books and love to look at the beautiful art work!

ringing bells in celebration

We lost power on Christmas day due to an ice/snow storm.
I celebrated having brand new cozy slippers to keep my feet warm.

Well, I did it!!!
I took at least four self-portraits a month in 2012!
I'm quite proud of that!!!

The experience has been a good one for me.
I started off shy, embarrassed and feeling ridiculous!
Then, I loosened up some and
even took a planking photo in a public place!!
I still don't like being in front of the camera, but I realize how important it is that my children and grandchildren see some photos of me.

Thanks,  Christy at Urban Muser for hosting this great group!
I've enjoyed seeing each of you each month!
