Third Thursday Challenge ~ November

Each month Brenda over at  How To Feather An Empty Nest challenges us to get out of our comfort zone and try something new. I know I'm pretty stuck on nature photography, so it does me good to train my eyes to look for something different. Brenda is the queen of architectural photography. The angles, lines, and shadows in her photography are amazing!  She also captures stunning window reflections. Click on the link above and see some of her gorgeous work. She also has beautiful images in her flickr photostream. Since her images intrigue me, I thought I'd try my hand at architectural photography. It's was definitely a challenge for me.

Brenda has done a series of "pie in the sky" shots.  I had a really hard time getting mine symmetrical. They're still a little off!

I've been visiting several small towns in Arkansas lately. Walking around the older parts of town and looking for interesting buildings. I love looking at the textures of bricks, rocks, pealing paint, and weathered windows. I also love the old original glass panes that have endured through the years.

Not only are the widows fascinating, but so are the unique doors.

Architecture is so different than nature! I found it hard to make the images look alive and not flat!  But, it was fun getting out for the day and looking at buildings in a new way!

  1. Interesting to see all your different shots, Cathy!
I like the shadow of the decoration on the third shot against the deep blue sky. The mottled green reflection in the window shot is nice too. I love the stonework and the door and plants in the last photo. It's nice to change our subject matter regularly to get us out of our ruts!

  2. Cathy - What a great challenge you have given yourself! And I am deeply flattered that my architectural shots provided some inspiration for your experimentation. And yes, getting a symmetrical "pie-in-the-sky" shot is oftentimes a challenge - I often have to correct the perspective in post-processing because I am unable to create the shot in camera. But regardless, you created some very interesting and unique images - all worthy additions to the pie series :)

And what amazingly lovely stonework you have found during your town visits - the glass in that window is stunning!

Your work is a perfect example of the type of exploration I was imagining when I launched the Third Thursday Challenge - an opportunity to step outside our comfort zone and try something new - even when it is uncomfortable and frustrating. Because look at the results!

  3. Good for you for trying something so different from your usual style, Cathy! Your "pies in the sky" are lovely, I especially like the third one with the decorative touches. Isn't it fun to explore a place and find these fascinating old buildings? Well done!

  4. I love the detail in these, and the way you captured similar angles in those first 3. Intriguing door and window too. I bet they could tell some stories!

  7. Good job on all of these, but I will say I actually gasped when I saw the one of the weather-worn window. Beautiful!
