Third Thursday Challenge ~ February 21, 2013

One of the things I love about photography is the many, many ways one can create interesting images with a camera. I ran across a magazine "50 Photo Projects" recently. It has several projects that are doable for someone like me, who doesn't have a lot of extra equipment. For this month's Third Thursday Challenge I gave one of their projects a try.

On my morning walk I picked a variety of weeds, looking for different shapes. I then set up my little studio. All I needed was copy paper, camera, tripod, weeds, and a vase. I taped the paper to a glass door, placed the weeds in a vase in front of it, and set up my camera. The article even gave suggested camera settings, which is always a big help for me! I like the end results. It was a whole new way to use my macro lens and see nature.

I would have never tried this if it hadn't been for Brenda's Third Thursday Challenge. Her monthly challenge gives me that little extra push I need to look for new ways to use my camera. The challenge is not all about photography. You can try something new in any medium.
You should come join us!!

  1. How inventive, Cathy and the result is lovely. These four images look like pen and ink drawings!

  2. Wow, Cathy! I LOVE this idea. I agree with Sandra that the results have a very artistic pen-and-ink quality - almost resembling graphic illutrations. And made even more effective by combining them together into this photo-collage. We can be amazed at the detail and different shapes of these common weeds/plants. I am just so thrilled that the Third Thursday Challenge provided the tiny spark that resulted in this wonderful exploration. I can see a complete series of these lovely black and whites - you are the master at finding the unusual in terms of natural shapes. I may have to copy you on this one :) Thanks so much for joining in with the Third Thursday Challenge!

  3. What a great project, Cathy! So artistic! Lovely mosaic of your images -- I think it belongs on a wall somewhere. You've inspired me too!

  4. These are so cool...and I suppose you could do it with almost any subject. I'd love to get my cat to sit still long enough to get that silhouette. (I think I need to put that dream to bed). I also like the 4 panel presentation. It reminds me of light filtering thru a window. Way cool. I'd like to check out that book.

  5. You have created a wonderful mosaic. I love that you put 'weeds' in the spotlight - even though they are silhouettes, they stand out more.

  7. Good for you Cathy, it is always so exciting to try some new things and this is super fun. I think that is the best way to get out of a funk is try something new or at least that seems to be the way with me.

  10. Great idea, Cathy. I want to try it myself - we have lots of great weeds around here. Your silhouettes turned out beautifully, and I like the way you've framed them, like and etched glass window.
