Unusual Weather

dorothy-in-poppy-field-the-wizard-of-oz-1939-11.jpg

How long has it been since you watched the Wizard Of Oz? Do you remember the scene where Dorothy and her friends fall asleep in a field of poppies?  Glinda, the good witch, sends snow that kills the poppies causing them to wake up? As they awaken, the cowardly lion looks around and says,

“Unusual weather we’re having ain’t it?"

It’s interestsing how a phrase from a movie will stick in your mind and sometimes becomes a family quote. My daughter’s favorite movie as a child was The Wizard Of Oz. To this day, we still say this particular line when we’re having unusual weather. I’ve said it a lot lately!! Where is winter…I wonder. Are we just going to skip it this year??

It's amazing how many types of weather
you can have all in one week!!

beautiful blue skies one day

storm clouds the next

 cold mornings that bring frost

warmer mornings that bring fog

The plants don't know what to think of this weather either!
My forsythia is blooming. Unheard of in February!!
They're an early spring flower, but not this early!!

The dandelions are already up!!
I'm really not ready for weeds yet!!

And, my hyacinth's
have poked out reaching for the sun.

I'm probably in  the minority, a big minority, but I don't want spring to be here just yet!  Winter is my favorite season and other than a slight dusting of snow in December we have had no winter!!  I even bought boots to tromp around in the snow. I'm using them, but for splashing around in the wet, soggy ground!! I'm usually pretty upbeat and go with the flow, but this has been hard!!  OK, so I'll look on the bright side!! It hasn't stopped me from taking pictures!!  I've had great opportunities for...

 shots of droplets

and gorgeous sunsets

I still miss winter though!!   :(

  1. Love your shots. The frost picture was so great. I don't mind the winter as long as the roads stay open. It is crazy here too.

  2. This is a great post, Cathy! And, I want you to know, I have purchased a set of rubber boots specifically so I can take the camera out in muddy weather... Look what this hobby is doing to us!!!

    But ya gotta love it!

  3. Wizard of Oz was my favorite movie when I was young - even with the nightmares caused by the Wicked Witch. What a great quote to describe this winter weather we have been having! My boots have taken me through puddles, mud, slush and 6 inches of snow on my photowalks this season. And I agree with you - even though the mild winter has made getting around easier, I miss a real winter.

  4. What wonderful photos, and I love your missive. I agree, where is winter? I haven't been skiing yet this year due to lack of snow, hoping I might get a trip in at the end of February, but if this keeps up - who knows. It is scary for those that need to make a living with snow, it is scary in a state like California that needs the water from snow. But more important, we need winter, hibernation is good for the soul.

  5. Love, love, love this post. And no it's not because you quoted my all time favorite movie! These are great photos!I think my favorite is the hyacinths with the sunrise (or sunset). It reminds me of an Easter sunrise! And yes..."Unusual weather we're having, ain't it?" Snow on the ground yesterday and short sleeves today!!
