Is there beauty out there?

in the midst of winter
the days were sunny but cold
everywhere she turned
there was starkness
bare limbs
dried leaves
faded flowers
the earth was resting
could she find beauty
she wandered through the woods
her eyes searching the ground
was there anything out there
a touch of color
a shape
tiny details
standing in a row
along the rotten tree
near the water's edge
that sparkled like diamonds

and there
touches of pink
surrounded by green
oh, look at the textures

rising above the golden leaves
curling toward the sun
gritty sand
on petals tinted with purple

stripes of brown
one on top of the other

lovely shape
in reddish tones
clinging to a log

Then she found the one
the one that made her gasp
a little bit of wood
dressed in a winter coat
She knew
she knew all along
it was out there
beauty in winter
she only had to look
slow down and look
beauty was found
May you be blessed by the Lord,
The maker of heaven and earth
Psalm 155:15

  1. You have a much sharper eye for nature's unappreciated beauty than I have. Well done, Cathy!

  2. I don't know whether to be more impressed by your words or by your photos. Either way, this is a wonderful post.

  3. I'm catching up on some blog reading and looked through several of your most recent posts, Cathy. As usual, your images are amazing, and you can make fungus look better than I'll ever be able to! The only question I have is where did you get that little Lego photographer??? So cute!

  7. I adore your little photographer alter ego! What a wonderful, fun, and yes, beautiful post!

  8. My favourite image is the first one: a tree lady striding out in her bark robes, arms outstretched to check out the forest for treasures, just like you!

  9. Amazing finds out there in Winter Wonderland. Great storytelling as well.

  10. Love all the fungi, many different shapes and colors and sizes. Good find and so much beauty out in each season all we have to do it point out cameras in any direction. Love your post Cathy.

  11. You are finding lots of beauty in winter -- I am enjoying your fungi series.

  12. I like these mindful posts, Cathy, and seeing winter's beauty through your lens.
