Friday Finds & Random 5 Friday

As I wandered around in the woods this week I spotted this old dead tree with the bark pealing away. When I walked around the tree my heart almost stopped because there on the back side was a  perfect heart shape. An upside down perfect heart shape! You can see where a piece of the bark is still hanging on. THIS is why I love nature! The surprises are innumerable!

Random Fact  #1
I still have my very first Teddy Bear. He's quite an old fellow. He came into my life in the early 50's!  He’s a Gund bear with soft fur, googly eyes, a vinyl nose, and a wind up music box. One day the music box quit working. As I child I took the music box out and sewed him back together. I did a horrible job using great big stitches with embroidery floss of all things. I have since added a new music box that plays “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic” and sewed him up properly!

Random Fact  #2
If I opened my own business it would be a one person business; just me. I rather like being alone! Anyway, I would be a clock maker.  I would enjoy putting all those small pieces together to create something that everyone needs. I would sit and work quietly listening to the ticking of clocks and the chimes as they rang in the hour.  Just so you know, I know nothing about making clocks, but since I read the book Timepiece by Richard Paul Evans and saw the movie based on the book, I've always thought clock making would be so enjoyable. I would make beautiful clocks with motion and chimes.

Random Fact  #3
My favorite place to walk is along this deserted railroad bed that runs behind our property. You've probably heard that before, but you haven't heard this. There's a proposal for this track to be made into a paved bicycle and pedestrian trail. It will roughly be 67 miles longs. I don't think I'll be walking from end to end!! I'm pretty happy about that. Right now the path is gravel covered with fallen trees, limbs, and  gumballs (seedpods from the gum tree).   You can't walk too fast or you'll twist an ankle and wind up face down!

Random Fact  #4
In 1939 the pine tree was designated as the official state tree of Arkansas. Pine trees are beautiful trees, but they're not very sturdy. Several years ago we removed the pine trees that were next to our house. You can see what happens when they get iced over and since they don't have a very good root system they topple very easily in storms. I'm sorry Arkansas, but there's a few less pine trees in our area, my house is safer!

Random Fact  #5
I know, I know you're tired of posts about the weather, but it snowed yesterday. If you look real close...see that white stuff in the bottom of this camellia bloom...that's snow!  We didn't even get enough to cover the ground, but it was beautiful watching it fall!

Have a blessed weekend!

we have all received one blessing after another."

  1. Well, I for one would have been so happy to just get a little bit for a photo op - I saw some beautiful big flakes fall out of my second story window last week, but it was here and there and nothing stuck. I love that you still have your childhood bear - he is so very sweet. And I found a red heart on the abdomen of an orchard spider once, I was overjoyed! :)

  2. Amazingly beautiful shots as always,Cathy! That camellia with the snow just blows me away! I love when I find hearts in nature too and you chose the perfect song for the music box to your childhood bear! Always fun popping in to your place to see what you've been capturing.

  4. Gorgeous photos! I, too, would love to be a clockmaker - a favourite great-uncle used to repair grandfather clocks, and I loved his workshop!!
It's my first Random 5, so lovely to 'meet' you and learn a wee bit about you :)

  9. It will take years, but it's exciting that you've got a bike/walking trail going in right behind you. We used to ride on those a lot when I was still riding. Good catch on that heart! Have a great weekend, Cathy. Hope Mr. H. is progressing well. And your dad.

  11. Love you post and Finds today!! The heart on the tree is just fabulous! And how neat to want to be a clock maker, sitting in the quiet room with all of the clocks ticking away - sounds delightful!

  12. What a fun post about your "randoms". I understand the appeal of being a clock maker, although I don't think there is much demand anymore. :) How sweet that your saved your special teddy bear. Is it possible for camellias to survive all that cold weather and snow? Your photo is amazing! Happy weekend!

  15. I wish I still had my first teddy bear, but stupidly I threw him out after I got married because he was old and beat up. Thankfully I have found one similar to him at an Antique market, but still not quite the same.

  17. Wow you still have your childhood bear. I don't think I have a single thing from my childhood. What a funny story about your taking the music box out and trying to sew the bear back up. My brother was always taking things apart as a kid.
    Loved your unexpected heart.
That trail being paved would be really nice I think.

  18. What an adorable bear and it's so special that it's from your childhood! The thought of sitting and making clocks seems peaceful, but I don't think I could do it. The trail is so nice - it seems like a neat idea! Have a nice weekend!

  19. I love all the beautiful surprises that nature gives us if we just look carefully. I've found a similar heart shape on an old tree, and of course, had to stop to take a photo! I have to say, I smiled when you mentioned the amount of snow that you've gotten, but that last photo of the camellia with the tiny snow flakes is so beautiful.

  20. ah, more snow for you. Bet you're happy. Don't understand that logic, but good for you. I would love to walk that abandoned RR line. Great place for Tula to have a run. If they do improve it, you won't have nearly the solitude. Double edged sword though-your ankles will be better off.
