A Walk In The Ice

I have thoroughly enjoying looking at all the snow pictures on FB, blogs, and flickr. They are gorgeous! My daughter who lives three hours away has about 6" in her yard. I'm a little envious, Okay, I'm a lot envious! It is white here, it could be mistaken as snow, but it's not...it's sleet! There were a few snowflakes that fell, but they were few and tiny and you had to look really hard to see them.

Ice is almost as pretty as snow until you look at the trees. Sleet doesn't stick to trees very well!  Isn't this quite a contrast...fall leaves still on the trees and ice on the ground.

Another sign of fall lingering.

After capturing the big picture, I decided to zoom in for a closer look.

Look at the size of the ice around these little blades of grass. This area was under the corner of the house where it was dripping off the roof.

A little lichen and ice on a rotten limb that fell from one of our trees.

Icicles hanging in front of the headlight on my SUV creates a pretty cool abstract.

Ice is not what you want for winter precipitation, but when it falls as sleet it's not quite as bad. Sleet doesn't stick to power lines and trees, so the power usually stays on. Ours was off for about three hours, but we have a backup gas heater and had plenty of food. The roads did become quite slick, but we didn't have anywhere to go. We were inside safe and warm watching it turn white.  When the sun came out for a little while today, I couldn't resist bundling up and walking around in the crunchy ice.

I'm praying that wherever you are, you're safe and warm.

  1. Brrrr, Cathy, it looks colder there than it is here. We got about an inch of snow overnight. It dusted the trees prettily and I went out early for some photos. I'm glad you didn't have to go out on the slick roads. I think ice might even edge out wind as my least favorite kind of weather!

  2. I just looked up the word 'sleet' to make sure I understood what you were talking about! I read that it's "frozen rain" and that it can sometimes be mixed with snow to give an impression of snow! It can also be very dangerous when walking or driving. I'm glad you didn't need to go out, but were able to stay snug at home.
I like the abstract looking image of icicles on your car (if that is what a SUV is!) I like the shiny, red bell sitting outside!
Keep warm and have a lovely Sunday!

  4. Your ice is indeed beautiful! Bravo to you for weathering the cold. We got away with just rain on Friday but there was a thin layer of ice this morning. However the freezing rain hasn't stopped so I shot from the porch windows! You did much better than I did!

  5. Cathy - yes, what a great juxtaposition of autumn-colored leaves and the white ground of ice. But ice-coated things make for some amazing images, don't they? Who can resist all that sparkle? As you can imagine, I simply LOVE that last abstract - all shiny ice and chrome! Wonderful.

  7. Ice would be my least favorite, but I love how you have captured everything encased in it. Truly beautiful.

  8. We get a lot of snow here, but never anything like the ice on the grass. Good thing you didn't have to travel.

  9. I am safe and warm at home. I got more snow here at home but I was in South Little Rock. Missed it coming down here. I am glad roads are open so I could come home today. Love the shot of the blades of grass. Hard to believe that the blades could still stand up with all that ice. Great photo day for you.

  10. You can make ice look beautiful! Love the close up shots, especially the ice on the grass. Perfect spot for that bright red bell! Wish you could have been here with us, but glad you found some beauty without the snow!

  11. Love these images, especially the red contrast. It's very foggy here but no snow (which I'm very grateful for, I'm not a fan unless I'm admiring it in other people's photos!).

  14. These are lovely - so looking forward to getting out with my camera in the snow - but we haven't even frost here yet! Stay warm! Apologies for the late comment - I'm still catching up from being on holiday. I always appreciate your links to my blog.
