From moss and loam
the mushrooms come.
From bark on trees,
from crumbling logs,
from musty leaves,
the mushrooms come.
From vast pale networks
underground
they shoulder up
without a sound;
they spread their damp
umbrella tops
and loose their spores
with silent pops.
Unbuttoning the forest floor,
the mushrooms come,
the mushrooms come.
Like noses pink
in midnight air
like giants' ears,
like elfin hair,
like ancient cities
built on cliffs,
the mushrooms come,
the mushrooms come.

I wandered through the children's section of the library recently and discovered a wonderful poetry book, Dark Emperor & Other Poems of the Night written by Joyce Sidman and illustrated by Rick Allen. Together they've created a gorgeous book of poems and illustrations about nature. The poems are easy to understand and the illustrations are fascinating. Not only are her poems wonderful, but along with each poem she has nature facts that relate to the poem. I think any child would love this look about nature. I I know I do! It will be joining my library very soon.
What a wonderful choice of mushrooms and toadstools you've found Cathy! That lovely poem is perfect to go with each of your photos! You discovered a perfect book of poems to illustrate your mushroom discoveries!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I love your new autumn header of acorns! Perfect for the season!
ReplyDeleteYou still have your touch. The mushrooms were so neat and I am glad you found a poem to celebrate their arrival.
ReplyDeleteWhat a talent you have! Perfect pictures for this lovely poem. I enjoyed this so much! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI think I need to check out this book as a way to ease myself into the realm of poetry. I always want to love it more than I do. You have a fascinating variety of mushrooms, and I love the way you presented them with a poem!
ReplyDeleteOh, I am amazed at the wide variety of mushrooms you have photographed, Cathy! They are all so beautiful! My mom and dad used to take walks hunting for edible/non-poisonous mushrooms. I don't like them myself and I think it may be the result of too much reading about people dying from poison mushrooms :)
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a wonderful book-will have to see if my library owns it! Hope your October will be enjoyable for you...
What a great selection of mushroom photos. So many varieties and the poem went perfectly with the photos.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to see this blog post from you, Cathy. Welcome back. Aren't libraries wonderful?
ReplyDeleteSuch a nice blog!
ReplyDeleteRegards.
