Scene & Story - April 2017

Every year we wait and wait and wait! This young tree in our yard is always the last tree to unfurl it's leaves each spring. Every year it makes me a little nervous until I see those first leaves begin to form. We have a lot of trees on our property, but this one is special. It was just a little seedling when we got it. It was so scrawny that I never expected it to live, but it did. Maybe it lived because it was planted with love and care. Our oldest grandson, Jake, was only four when he helped Jerry plant the tree. I remember his excitement as he helped dig the hole. He held the tree straight as Jerry packed the dirt around the roots and then he gave it lots of water. It's been ten years. Jake has grown unbelievable fast and so has the little tree. Jake is taller than me and the tree is now at least 15 feet high. Each year as I wait for it's springs leaves I think of a little boy with a big smile and dirty hands helping his Gramps!

  1. That's a great story as I'm so partial to trees too and we have a couple tied to memories of my late husband.

  2. What a lovely story of how this tree was planted by Jerry with the help of little four year-old Jake. Both the tree and your grandson have been growing up together! The young leaves are such a pretty colour.

  3. I have a tree like that too - a Dogwood tree, given to me on Mother's Day 2011. It is a slow grow and every year I wait and watch it, hoping for a few blooms, which it does have this year. Yay! And it is protected and watched over by my two dogs who lie beneath it. Thank you for sharing your story.

  4. Cathy, this story touches my heart. I've planted special trees at several places where I've lived, but have never stayed long enough to see them grow very much. I like to think they are still there and blessing someone else now.

  5. I also have a lovely memory like this of a magnolia planted at my daughters birth. Lovely shot of these tender new leaves

  6. A beautiful scene and story about one of the sweetest parts of life. My husband has been wanting to plant a new tree. I think we should.

  7. super little story Cathy.I remember planting a tree I got at school when I was in grade 2. Every year as the tree grew taller I felt so proud that I had planted it although we really didn't think about the environment much back then.

  9. A lovely story, Cathy! We have a similar tree in our yard that my oldest son planted as a simple acorn. It is now over 20 feet tall--and I think of my son each time I see it :) Happy Mother's Day to you!

  11. oooooh cathy, i ADORE this story, really!! when each of my sons were born, we planted a tree, those trees had so much meaning. we moved away from our starter house and left the trees behind. i didn't want to - the sale agreement said we could take them but we got so bust, we just didn't. a big regret in life - getting too busy sometimes!!!

thank you for the beautiful comment you left for me about living with MS. so many people don't know what it takes and so many people ask me...the media does a poor job about awareness. i appreciate your friendship!!!
