A Little Too Early

Sometimes the simplest words can mean the most. His simple question on a Saturday morning was "do you want to go look at leaves?" Why is that so special? He drives all over Arkansas everyday delivering food for the Arkansas Food Bank. On Saturday the last thing he wants to do is go for a long drive, but he asked anyway, knowing that I'm isolating at home and needing to get away. That's love! Well, you know my answer! Yes! Let me grab my camera!

He chose the Greer's Ferry Lake area as our destination. He drives that way a lot and had some things in addition to the leaves that he wanted to show me. We were about a week too early for the full showing of color.

Although the fall colors weren't at their peak, there were other things that captured my interest, like these trees literally growing out of small patches of dirt on huge rocks.

It wasn't that we didn't see any autumn colors, we did! I asked him to pull over and let me take this picture. The reds were gorgeous with the morning sun shining on them!

If you look closely, there's a little bit of color starting.

I was watching some show the other day and the criminal had a strange fascination with taking pictures of bridges. I was offended. I'm no criminal and I don't find it strange to love bridges!

We drove on to Heber Springs so Jerry could show me this well-kept dogtrot house. Dogtrot houses were thought to originate in the 1800's. The central opening between two rooms, the living area and the kitchen/dining room, would create cross breezes making it the coolest spot in the house. It was also where the family dog camped out, hence the name dogtrot was given.

Jerry was disappointed for me that the trees had not yet turned. Me, I wasn't disapppointed at all! There are plenty of other things I love to take pictures of; old barns top that list.

wind damage, never repaired

Most of the barn pictures were taken out of the window as we drove by. Thankfully on country roads Jerry could slow down a little as we passed.

And, then there was this old business. I have no idea what it was, but the sign on the door says office.

It wasn't the day Jerry wanted me to have. He wanted to show me autumn's colors, but it was the very best day and one I desperately needed!
