Macro Monday ~ April 30

I've been in a little bit of a photo-taking slump this past week! I just can't seem to get inspired by anything. I'm a little tired of taking photos of flowers, especially since the only things blooming right now in my yard are petunias and clematis! Don't get me wrong! I love flowers, but how many images do I really need of these two flowers! I went in search of something, anything, for today's macro shot and came up empty handed. Then, we had a quick little shower and I always like to find water drops, so I tried again. While looking around my shade gardens at the different hostas and the rain drops on them, I spotted this beautiful caterpillar!

Isn't he the cutest thing; from the tip of his little red head...

to his pointy tail!!

And, those four little tufts on his back and all that hair...amazing!!

I'm so glad I kept looking!!

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

Our prompts were:
yellow
something that makes you smile
ancient or antique
splash
in the sun

Yellow
The squirrels are still eating acorns.
I found this one sitting on top of a fence post.
These acorns are yellow on the inside.

something that makes you smile
Going barefoot in the clover makes me smile!

ancient or antique
antique milk can and a glimpse of a wagon wheel

splash
I had the best time throwing rocks in a stream trying to capture a splash!
I liked the shape of this, the green reflection behind it,

and the mud in the center where the rock sank.

in the sun
This walkway was in the sun creating
beautiful shadows and curves.

Hope you enjoy the coming week!!

Leap Into Spring ~ Rain/Water

Our theme this week for Leap Into Spring was rain or water. Since there's been no rain, it has to be water!! I attended a retreat this weekend and had a very hard time staying inside! I took several breaks with my camera.  This is a little creek that flows along the edge of their property.

Water reflections always fascinate me! I love the small clouds peeking over the trees.

The view from our bedroom window!

Clover was growing along the banks of the lake.
You can tell the wind was really blowing this day!

My sister and I even lay down in the clover
and soaked up a little sun!

I hope you're getting the chance to enjoy your spring!

{in the picture} - April 2012

I wish you could come and take a walk with me.
We'd go to Wildwood Park where
there's a lake and lovely gardens.
We could wander along the paths
through the azalea garden.
The scent of the rhododendrons permeate the air!
As we follow the Dogwood Trail
we'll have to use stepping stones
to cross several streams.
We could sit and visit for a spell.
I'm sure we'd have plenty to talk about.
Of course, we'd take our cameras
and spend hours photographing
the beautiful flowers and scenery!
When we get weary we could sit back
and relax in the gazebo by the lake...

 and watch the swans.

If we could walk together,
I'd be so happy I would twirl.

Maco Monday ~ April 23

I visited one of my favorite photography places this past week Pugh's Old Mill  (used in the opening scene of "Gone With The Wind") in North Little Rock, Arkansas.  In the garden surrounding the mill most of the early spring flowers were gone.
I did manage to fine a few lovely flowers.

Iris

Each week I think I'm going to post something other than flowers for Macro Monday. But, the flowers just keep grabbing my attention!

Leap Into Spring ~ blossoms/trees

The blossoms on our trees have come and  gone!
The trees are lush with spring green leaves.

Since there are no blossoms,
I took this a little different direction
and decided to capture
new leaves as they spring out.

The beauty of the blossoms are gone,
but there is still beauty in the fresh, new leaves.
I was amazed by their lovely colors!

Exploring With A Camera ~ Dynamic Diagonals

When I began photography I didn’t know there were so many things you need to think about before you snap that shutter button! It’s not just what you shoot, it’s how you shoot it. Remembering and applying the rules of composition can take something ordinary and turn it into an amazing photo. That being said, I also believe that I don’t have to be strict with these rules. Some of my best images broke a rule or two!!

In Kat’s Exploring With A Camera  the theme is using diagonals in photography. Horizontal lines seem to make an image calm, vertical lines suggest stability, and diagonal lines create feelings of drama or movement. I decided to explore this subject in my nature images. The use of diagonals is something I seem to instinctively do, as many of my photos have diagonals in them.

The diagonal line that goes from top left to bottom right creates the greatest sense of motion and can be called the “primary diagonal.” For instance, in the photo below, by using this diagonal line, your eye very quickly follows from stem to tip.

The opposite direction, of course, is from bottom left to top right, the “secondary diagonal.” Our eye does not travel this line as easily.  This photo has a very subtle diagonal line, the  main vein of the leaf.  It's considered dynamic because the angle is sharp.  I found it interesting that I have more photos with secondary diagonal lines.  I wonder if it’s because I want to take my time looking across the image and enjoying every detail of nature.

The diagonal line of the rock wall is less dynamic because it has a smaller angle. The line seems to gently lead us along the path through the beautiful flowers.

Often in photography, we find multiple diagonal lines such as parallel lines. I purposely created these diagonal lines by tilting my camera. If I had left it with a straight horizon, it would not have been as interesting.

Not all multiple lines are parallel. The lines of the log and the stick create a more dynamic background.

Sometimes we find converging diagonal lines. Converging lines have different angles that meet and lead your eyes to a certain point. I had to include the next one just because it made me laugh! As I was looking through photos, guess what I saw on this ducks feet! Yes, converging lines leading right up to his legs!! You can find converging lines in a lot of strange places!  It may not be quite what Kat had in mind, but it makes me smile!!

Zig-zag lines can be used to create an interesting flow of motion through an image. In this photo my eye starts at the bottom of the path, follows it up to the stone wall, and then across to the path that leads out of the picture. The paths and wall create a natural flow for your eyes to follow whether you start at the top or bottom of the photo.

Sometimes a diagonal line can be implied. In this photo you don't have an actual line, but your eyes see a line created by the ripples and the ducks. Having them at a diagonal seems to make them move through the image.

Below, I leave you with some non-nature images with diagonal lines. See if you can identify the different diagonals. Remember, some lines can fit more that one category.

Macro Monday ~ April 16, 2012

(SOOC)

Clematis are such beautiful flowers to photograph!
First, the fuzzy buds appear

which unfurl their petals revealing the spidery center.

The shimmery petals reach toward the sun

before they fall off and leave this gorgeous center!
The perfect place to catch droplets of water!
